Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (Head Office: Osaka, Japan; President: Nozomu Mori), Daihen Corporation (Head Office: Osaka, Japan; President: Shoichiro Minoge), Sinanen Corporation (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Masao Watanabe), Mitsubishi Research Institute, Ltd. (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Kenji Yabuta), and WiTricity Corporation (Head Office: Massachusetts, USA; CEO: Alex Gruzen) have established the EV Wireless Power Transfer Council to promote the practical application and spread of wireless power transfer* as a social infrastructure to support the spread of electric vehicles (“EVs”).
1. Background of Establishment
EV wireless power transfer technology not only enhances convenience for EV users by eliminating the need to plug in and unplug chargers, but also is expected to be a promising social infrastructure. It can maximize the use of renewable energy and balance the supply and demand of electricity by enabling power transfer when the EV is in motion as well as when it is stationary, and by enabling a constant connection between the EV and the power grid.
The industry, government, and academia must cooperate in various studies that contribute to institutionalization, standardization, and commercialization of the technology in order to make wireless power transfer a social infrastructure.
2. Purpose of the Council’s Activities
・Promotion of EV wireless power transfer as a social infrastructure
・Publicize and raise awareness of the practical application and promotion of EV wireless power transfer
・Promote standardization of EV wireless power transfer
3. Activities
・Develop and recommend scenarios and roadmaps for the widespread introduction and use of the power system
・Support demonstration experiments for practical application and dissemination
・Requesting guidelines and deregulation for installation and operation
・Study of standards and specifications required for power supply networking
(charging/discharging equipment, systems, authentication, billing etc.)
4. Promoters
・Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.
・Daihen Corporation
・Sinanen Corporation
・Mitsubishi Research Institute, Ltd.
・WiTricity Corporation
5. Date of Establishment of the Council
The date of incorporation will be the date of the general meeting of incorporation, which is scheduled to be held in June 2024.
* This technology enables automatic bi-directional power transmission between the coil on the ground side and the coil attached to the EV side, using the principle of electromagnetic induction while the EV is stationary or in motion.
